Clarence D. Smith Sr. Scholarship Recipients
C.D. Smith Sr. graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1915. His senior quote was, “The world must have great minds.” He was a man above reproach, honest, kind, and loved by all who knew him. He was a masterful orator, a brilliant student, a good athlete, and a stalwart Christian gentleman.
C.D. Smith was a college professor. He and his wife, Vivia, had two children: Clarence D. Smith Jr. and Eleanor Smith. The elder Smith taught his children the importance of a good education and giving to educational institutions.
During their lifetimes, Clarence and Eleanor Smith gave more than $200,000 to establish an endowed scholarship in their father’s name. Upon each of their deaths, they left an estate gift to ensure that the scholarship would be one of the largest private endowments for students at Mississippi College. Today, the scholarship endowment is valued at more than $3.1 million. This was a loving legacy to their father and demonstrated their desire to carry out his life’s passion for education.
Allie Morris, a freshman from Illinois, said, “Receiving an endowed scholarship has blessed me in numerous ways, not only academically but also spiritually. Endowments graciously enabled me to further my education when I felt led by the Lord to Mississippi College. Endowments allow me to learn and to grow scholarly, and to live out my faith each day by pursuing what the Lord has in store for me and many others at Mississippi College.”
Kylee Whatley, a freshman from Louisiana, said, “An endowed scholarship helped make Mississippi College possible for me! The finances were a concern when I decided that I wanted to attend Mississippi College, being that I am an out-of-state student. Overall, the endowment I received helped ease some of the financial worries and also confirmed that it is God’s plan for me to attend Mississippi College!”
